Honoring Our Disabled Vets

Last Saturday, October 24th was Disabled American Vets Day here at Laidlaw’s Harley-Davidson. Our local chapter set us up with Harley’s Heroes, who were here with the DAV (Disabled American Vets) mobile service van.

Veterans of all ages and wars were lined up early to have the opportunity to get their benefit issues cleared up, and make sure they were being taken care of. After serving 60 Vets (20 more than the average DAV event), the mobile unit headed out.

Ron Hansel of the local DAV chapter was here BBQ’ing with his family all day, and the burgers were excellent. Thanks to Ron for all his hard work in setting up the event.

Had it not been for some bad weather timing, I’m sure we would have had even more Vets to service. Laidlaw’s was proud to host our Vets and look forward to seeing them again next year.

Cops For Tots Celebrates 15 Years of Charity

I have been attending the “Cops For Tots” events since I was youth, and I must say the last couple of years have been the best ever. The 2010 LAPD Cops For Tots event was held this past Sunday at the Los Angeles Police Academy.

The 2010 Car Show was second to none.

With what appeared to be at least 500 cars jamming the lower parking lots at the academy, the line was busy early. As a vendor we were asked to be there by 5AM, and there was already a steady line of cars for the show. The registration tent was busy early, and by 8AM it was a packed house. This year’s rendition included some awesome kid’s entertainment free of charge. Kids, and adults alike, were all invited to get their faces painted, carve a Halloween pumpkin, and create their own art.

All of which were completely FREE.

The officers running the show are well organized, everything is conveniently mapped out, and best of all, the event is totally free to attend. Short of buying a cool soda, hot dog, or nachos; there was plenty to keep the family entertained. With so many cool cars, and nostalgic police vehicles to check out, there was no shortage of fun.

Manny, Moe, and Jack from Pep Boys were roaming around, and so were other celebrities that come out to lend their support. The winners were awarded their trophies, and the crowd subsided, but one thing was left clear; The LAPD Cops For Tots event was a resounding success and anyone who missed this years should mark their calendars for next year’s.

As one of the last totally free events in So Cal, Cops For Tots is the whole package for a Sunday of fun with the family.

Over the past fifteen years, the Central Traffic Division of the Los Angeles Police Department has been proud to organize the annual COPS for TOTS Car Show. Since its inception in 1996, the proceeds from this show have benefited the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit of the Los Angeles Children's Hospital. As our show grew larger and our proceeds increased, we expanded the number of children's charities that share in the success of our show. The COPS for TOTS Car Show became a valued tradition for organizers and participants alike. The shows have resulted in very successful days of family fun for a good cause. Bob Laidlaw 1911 Harley-Drag Race

On October 14th 2010 Bob Laidlaw was challenged to a drag race, his 1911 Harley-Davidson VS a 1911 Pierce Motorbike. Both bikes are single cylinder and belt driven. There was plenty of trash talk going on as the event drew nearer. Bob even put air plane fuel in his bike to give it a little extra spunk. In the end Bob was victorious by a large margin due to some difficulties on the Pierce half way down the track. I think the drivers got more horsepower from peddling these bikes then from their engines. In the end Bob had a top speed of 31 MPH and had a 24 second time. The turn out was great and everyone had a great time.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month at Laidlaws

This month is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and here at Laidlaw's we are supporting this cause most notably with a portion of the proceeds of the sale of Pink Label items going towards Breast Cancer Network of Strength. Though there has been a statistical decline in the incidence of the disease, there is still the 1 in 8 chance one is personally affected or knows someone.

This year my mom decided to tell me about her breast cancer. She was trying to save me the pain of worry without realizing that early detection is one of the keys to recovery of the disease. Fortunately it was still very early, she had a mastectomy, and her biopsy was negative. She is due for her mammogram and hopefully things will go well.

2010 Ride for Autism

Most have heard of the Ride for Autism here in LA, but many have not. This year’s Ride For Autism is scheduled for August 7th, and will once again begin @ Laidlaw’s Harley-Davidson. Grand Marshall Dean McDermott will be on hand to lead an expected 1000 riders on a new route to Original Mike’s in Santa Ana, Ca. With the departure of the Love Ride and California Bike Week, the Ride For Autism is anxious to become one of the largest rides in Southern California. But we need everyone’s help. With so many newly diagnosed cases of Autism spectrum disorders every day, month, and year; now is the time to get involved and help researchers and treatment specialists to meet the ever growing demand. Chances are you know someone or a family that has been affected by Autism. We need your support. So whether you ride or not, Harley-Davidson or Honda,
this summer make plans to be a part of this historic and hopefully record breaking ride.
Last summer saw 625 riders and supporters all participate, this year, the goal is 1000.

April is check your helmet month.

April is “Check Your Helmet Month” and you need to be aware that anytime your helmet has been dropped or suffered an impact of any kind, it is no longer considered D.O.T approved and should be replaced. Also, if your helmet is three to five years in age, you should also start looking into purchasing a new one. The fibers in the helmet start to break apart over time and even though this is not apparent to the eye, this poses as a major safety risk. Get ready for this riding season and come check out a new helmet!

The Legend of the Gremlin Bell

In searching the internet I found:
“Legend has it that a small bell attached to your motorcycle, close to the ground, catches the Evil Road Spirits. The little gremlins live on your motorcycle causing all kinds of mechanical problems. The cavity of the bell attracts these evil spirits, but the constant ringing drives them insane and they lose their grip and fall to the ground.”

I thought about this when asked/told that I should have one. This led me to the superstitions we as riders have. Mine is that I carry my dad’s dog tags from WWII with me as I ride because since I have a few years back I haven’t had an accident on my bike. I realize it is a superstition, and though my dad’s dogtags have immense personal meaning to me, I know in the end it has nothing to do with my not having an accident. As we get older, we ride differently…in my case more cautiously. And then I’m reminded by my Service Manager Keith that checking my bike before I ride helps limit the possibilities of potential problems. As the sun shines and the weather gets better, Keith suggests that it never hurts to do the following:

1. Verify you have fuel.
2. Check and adjust mirrors if necessary.
3. Check your oil.
4. Check operational control of:
a. Front and rear brakes.
b. Throttle.
c. Clutch and shifter.
5. Check steering operation.
6. Check tire condition and pressures.
7. Check electrical operations of:
a. Headlamp.
b. Tail lamp.
c. Turn signals.
d. Horn.
8. Check for leaks:
a. Fuel.
b. Oil.
c. Brakes.
9. Check belt for wear or damage.
10. Service your bike as necessary.

I still am a bit superstitious, and I will still continue to carry those dogtags, but I do fill just a little bit safer in checking my bike before I ride.

Ladies Garage Party 2010

Usually before an event like our garage party I get nervous and fidgety, but when I walked into the welcome area and heard all of the excited chatter coming from the ladies that evening I instantly knew it would be a great event. I took a few moments to just sit and watch the conversation, smell the food and noticed the small flock of women gathered around the men in uniform. The guest speaker kicked things off; reinforcing the individualism and empowerment that motorcycling brings to everyone, women especially. My first group was all-smiles when they came over to listen to what I had to say. There were raised hands, I answered their questions, they wanted to get up close and personal with the bikes that were on display and the ever-present applause after picking up that “so big motorcycle” off its side brings a smile to my face every time.

The enthusiasm didn’t slow down until everyone had a chance to shop and the surveys were filled out. *sigh* One of the best parts was knowing that the information I shared made a difference, enough so that I caught a couple of ladies taking notes! What a cool thing to know it’s worth writing down. I was also lucky enough to be pulled aside and complimented on the work I had done to one lady’s husband’s bike and how she appreciated that I was keeping both of their safety in mind. What an ego-booster! I’ll try not to let it go to my head. -Jennifer

Halloween Party

Holiday merriment was in full swing on Halloween at Laidlaw’s this year; with trick-or-treating, two Halloween Costume Contests, great food, and not to mention the California Gold State Synchronized Skating team and their raffle of new motorcycle. Laidlaw’s goes above and beyond to make their customers feel welcome and part of the family; this occasion was no different. Not only were there customers participating in the fun but staff members joined in the Halloween amusement as well by dressing up in creative costumes, and passing out candy to our younger guest.

The excitement lasted all day; each and every separate event played its own part in keeping our customers entertained and willing to stick around. The California Gold Skating team kicked things off with music, booths, as well as enough lunch to go around. Contestants of the contest were to come to reception to register themselves and have their picture taken. Each contest had original ideas and wonderful costumes to show off. I was pleased to see that my sister brought in my nephew to join in. Each department made him feel welcome and all of the festivities surely made his day. In the adult costume contest I was particularly impressed with our first prize winner Anthony Mancilla, as the energizer bunny.

The day’s entertainment lead up to main event, the California Gold Skating Team had work almost all year in order to raffle away a Harley-Davidson and in hopes to raise enough money to reach their goal, the chance to compete. The girls also held additional raffles but none drew such a turn out as the chance to win a new Harley-Davidson motorcycle from our store. Bill Hennigan, a costumer of Laidlaw’s since 2002, received the prize of a life time. When he received the phone call he initially assumed it was a joke, following his instinct he called Laidlaw’s immediately. I answered the phone, he told me about his disbelief and I reassured him that he was the rightful winner. The shock and obvious joy in his voice was undeniable. As an employee there is no better feeling than knowing one of your most loyal customers is rewarded in a way that all customers should be.

Cops 4 Tots Car and Motorcycle Show

The show has resulted in very successful days of family fun for a good cause. This year the fourteenth annual CTD COPS for TOTS Car and Motorcycle Show was held on Sunday, October 25, 2009, at the Los Angeles Police Academy. Entrants began lining up before dawn to get a spot at this popular local show that included vendors, cars, bikes, a race vehicles. One of the real highlights were all of the restored old school police and CHP vehicles that lined the main drive.

Registration was swamped for hours very early on, and once the raffles began there was a permanent crowd hanging out to claim all of the generously donated prizes. Some of the best gifts included tools, a cruise, a Vegas trip, Harley-Davidson helmets and apparel, and of course a bunch of electronics.

The fog and cool temperatures gave way to a beautiful sunny day. The crowd came and went but everyone seemed to be having a great time. The food vendors were busy serving up great chow, including a Tri-tip plate complete with all the fixings, and it was-out of this world- good! Vendors of all types were neatly arranged in front of the large stage that played host to several bands that ripped it up. The bands kept the entire crowd’s toes tapping with their mix of old school rock and roll and newer stuff.

Officer Sean Reinhardt was there with his “GOT-YA!” (Get On Track – Youth Alternatives) Race team (wwwlapdracing.com) he brought with him a miniature race car that was a favorite wit the kids. Who were crawling in and out of it all day long. Sean was very gracious to everyone and even let kids climb all over his tricked out road racing motorcycle!

All of the LAPD officers that participated were super gracious and helped to ensure it was an organized, smoothly run event. The cars were amazing and the bikes were nothing to laugh at. I was proud to be a part of this event and can’t wait to be back again next year! -Ty

American Heat 2009 Ride

American Heat 2009 in Palm Springs this weekend seemed to be a huge success as one local news station reported thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts came to the desert. A local police officer estimated as many as 10,000 people. Palm Canyon, the main street through Palm Springs, was closed for bikes, vendors, and a stage for last night’s concert. With great weather, I talked with several people in the Service Department who said they were going because the move of the venue to the main drag. It was great to see all the people especially considering the last couple years the event was held in the parking lot of the Spa Casino with what seemed only a couple hundred riders.

I was impressed at seeing the variety of people with license plates from as far as Oregon, Arizona, and Nevada. There were mostly Harley’s with a good smattering of sport bikes parked alongside each other. From t-shirts, to helmets, to custom seats made on the spot, the vendors were busy. Businesses along Palm Canyon were packed with people trying to cool off or just get something to eat which helped the local economy that has struggled recently.

Because people are staying closer to home due not wanting to spend much, Palm Springs is really only a gas tank (less than $20) away from the Los Angeles metropolitan area. There is a lot of great riding in the area without the traffic and little rain to ruin the ride. My personal favorite when it gets hot is to ride early through the desert cities on Highway 111, go up Highway 74 to Idyllwild for lunch and a walk, then back down Highway 243 into Banning, and finally onto Interstate 10 back into Palm Springs. Frankly, it was nice to see all the riders at the American Heat event because it told me the sport of motorcycling is alive and well. Laidlaw's Sales Team Back Road Ramble

For months the Laidlaw Sales team had planned a Sunday ride to the Riverside and Temecula area. The date was set with the meeting time of 8AM sharp at a gas station on Foothill in La Verne. My name is Steve Cordell, Business Manager, and was the instigator and “road captain” and had planned a back road 300 mile run through 4 counties. However, the expected heat wave forecast of 100 degrees and 3 of the 5 bikes brand new and just broken in, the ride was shortened a bit. The night before the ride, Matt Laidlaw, Sales and F&I, asked me the estimated miles of the trip. Without thinking, I threw out a response of “180 miles”. Matt then asked what time we would be back. I then told Matt we would be back two days later. Matt didn’t ask any more questions.

Sunday 8:00 AM

I arrived first, Chris Tolman, Sales Manager, and Matt Laidlaw arrived right behind me. The three of us were gassed and ready to go at 8 AM. Salesmen Don Abundis and Phil Locke were AWOL. Salesman Tom Armijo had already had an excuse because his wife made him go with her out of town.

The group waited in the station lot for about a minute when we heard a loud bang from the other side of the station. A Mercedes had just pulled away from the gas pump with the gas hose still in the gas tank and dragging behind the car. The pump handle broke away from the top of the gas pump. The three of us started laughing uncontrollably at the driver until we saw this huge guy get out of the car and give us a dirty look. We still kept laughing, but not as loud and obnoxious.

The “technology” boys got out their cell phones and started texting the AWOL boys. Phil had just got out of bed and Don was on his way. I gave them the 15 minute rule, at 8:15 we leave for breakfast. Chris text the directions to the diner and of we departed at 15 past the hour.

First stop was Corky’s Kitchen diner in Rancho at the 210 Freeway and Haven off ramp. Don had caught up to us at the Freeway and Phil was still 40 minutes behind us somewhere. We ordered a great breakfast and over ate the way bikers are supposed to do. Phil arrived right on time as we received the bill to pay and leave. Phil did have time to pick off some toast and sausage left on our plates. We were good to go now.

Second stop was Skip’s Harley-Davidson in Riverside. A little freeway jaunt for 35 minutes and we arrived at 10 AM. Not that we were going to “rub it in” on their sales staff on a Sunday morning that our team was out riding and their team had to work, but that’s exactly what we did. We took a group picture from the middle of the sales floor and received a tour from Rick their Floor Manager. We had a good time, thanks Rick!

We left Skip’s and headed south toward Perris Valley’s back roads. I promised two stream crossings but both were dry creeks this day. Next stop was an hour and half later in Lake Elsinore. We parked in the shade under the pumps at a Chevron Station when a male in his 40’s driving a 911 Porsche came in looking at our Harley-Davidson machines we had on display. Chris had him sold on a new Street Glide within 2 minutes. The guy was then swamped with 5 business cards from our team.

Next stop, Hell’s Kitchen at the top of the grade on Ortega Highway. I had told the guys were going to ride to some real biker joints. We then left there heading for Ortega Highway Route 74.

We looped around the edge of Lake Elsinore and then straight up the Elsinore grade to Hell’s Kitchen bar and restaurant. The scene was crowded with bikes and riders. It was about 90% Harley-Davidson today. After a quick iced tea and a seat in the shade with a nice mister spray, we had time to take some more pictures. Matt and Chris positioned their two bikes side-by-side which drew a crowd to look at their rides. If you haven’t seen them yet, they are both poster children for Harley-Davidson’s Dark Custom look.

Off we went due west toward Orange County. Next stop, Cook’s Corner in Santiago Canyon, the real Orange County biker hang out. Once we reached the bottom of Ortega Highway, the temperature dropped about 20 degrees. I took the back way to Cook’s and we arrived within an hour. The place was really rocking out today. We found a table in the shade and Chris and Matt had some lunch and munched on some great burgers. Don and I were still digesting breakfast. Phil being single, was too busy checking out all the fine looking Orange County biker babes in the patio and missed out on the second chance for a meal.

The time was approaching 3 PM and Chris already had 12 text messages from his wife on his cell phone. Phil was getting cranking from the lack of food. Matt wanted to head home so he would not miss dinner. Don and I wanted to get back anyway to watch a football game. Yea, it was time to go. We jetted out on Santiago Highway and about hour later I pulled into my garage in San Dimas. My wife heard me arrive and walked outside to see me laughing. I had noticed my mileage for the day at 178.0 miles. I knew that Matt lived 2 miles north of me in Glendora and wondered if he would notice his mileage. I had no clue that we would be going only 180 miles today!

Laidlaw's, a Green Machine

Did you know, according to gogreeninitiative.org:

• For every ton of paper that is recycled, the following is saved: 7,000 gallons of water; 380 gallons of oil; and enough electricity to power an average house for six months.
• You can run a TV for six hours on the amount of electricity that is saved by recycling one aluminum can.
• By recycling just one glass bottle, you save enough electricity to power a 100-watt bulb for four hours.

As the population grows at record rates, and landfills continue to be made because of the amount of trash created, and natural resources become depleted, we have to search alternatives to alleviate these issues. Here at Laidlaw’s we’ve been on the green bandwagon since our current home was built seven years ago. For one, our roof is covered with a white reflective coating to reduce heat absorption. Then on top of that we have solar panels that cover most our roof and our average kilowatts per day of usage is below 2005 levels (that’s as far back as I could find data). Weekly the solar inverters are monitored for any issues and quarterly the solar panels are cleaned to maximize their efficiency.

We also use a computerized system to manage our lights and swamp coolers and the time their on and to thermostatically manage our air conditioning units. We have multiple AC units so that we can monitor the zones and vary temperature settings accordingly. We also use filters that we clean regularly rather than replacing them as often as the electrical and HVAC companies suggest.

Other things we’ve been doing are:
• Copying/printing on both sides of paper so as to not waste paper.
• Using companies that pick up and recycle batteries, oil, and tires.
• Sending used toner cartridges back to our supplier for reuse.
• Donating old computer equipment to organizations that can reuse the items or use the parts inside of these items to be recycled.
• And selling vehicles that are green. Motorcycles have been tested as having great gas mileage. Even the large touring bikes are listed as averaging 54 MPG. Riders, you knew that motorcycling were economically as well as efficient modes of transportation!!

Recently our Service Department started recycling other fluids, cardboard, plastics, and steel from products and items used in the repairing vehicles. It has gone so well that we lessened the amount of weekly pickups from our regular trash company from three times per week to once per week.

Recycling takes time and work, but in the end your kids, friends, and the environment will benefit. So the next time you’re thinking of going green, hopefully using us as an example can set the standard. In today’s economy and times, every little bit helps.

A Hero's Farewell

Driving home on the 210 freeway I suddenly saw the distinctive red and blue flashing lights of two CHP motorcycle officers in my rearview mirror. I was nervous because yes I was speeding. I slowed down as they passed. We thought it was traffic from the county fair. Then I noticed several motorcycle officers coming up quickly and fire trucks behind them. Now we thought maybe there was an accident ahead.

As vehicles started to slow, we saw all the police and fire vehicles come alongside us and it was at that time my wife said it must be the motorcade for one of the fallen firefighters in the Station Fire. It was, for Captain Ted Hall. When we came to the next overpass it was then that we noticed all the people, fire trucks, and other fire fighters on the overpass paying homage to their brother. It was incredible to see the men standing on their trucks either saluting or with their hats or helmets over their heart. The ladder trucks had huge American flags. It was heart wrenching as we went under every overpass from San Dimas to the I15 freeway watching the same scene. I was choked up as my wife and I drove past the same sight over and over for miles. We shared our moment of silence.

A Closer Look at What's New in 2010

So the frequent question I have been getting as customers come through the door is, “What’s new with the 2010’s”. Nothing unusual, of course, for everyone to be excited about the latest changes taking place at the Harley-Davidson motor company. I decided to write a quick blog about what’s new for the 2010 model year.

There are a few new models introduced into the line up. Frankly, I would classify them as either different versions of current models or a reintroduction of past models. The Dyna Wide Glide (FXDWG) has made a come back after a one year hiatus. It has come back with some new styling upgrades as well as a flame paint job as an option to spice things up. The styling is closely related to that of the StreetBob and the FatBob. It shares the Tommy gun exhaust that is on the Fatbob and it has the blacked out drive train. The Wide Glide has always been a favorite and has stirred up some excitement with its recent arrival to our dealership.

The FatBoy is a Harley icon and has been a staple in the lineup for about 20 years now. The FatBoy Lo (FLSTFB) is the dark, evil step son of its predecessor and the newest addition to the Softail family. The Fatboy Lo does two things: it gives the rider a lowered seat height with its factory lowered suspension and low profile seat. Then it delivers a dark custom look. The bike has black wheels, upper fork sliders, fork cover kit, header pipes, and many other parts are all blackened. I predict this bike to be a hit with many customers.

The big upheaval recently in the Harley world was started with the rumor that the Road Glide was going to be discontinued and forgotten forever. Well the rumor came true unfortunately, but it’s a good thing the motor company decided to release the Road Glide custom! (FLTRX) Wow, everyone can breathe now. Basically what happened was the engineers at Harley decided that the Street Glide was getting too much of the attention in the touring family. With all its fancy, sporty styling the Street Glide has taken off since its introduction in 2006. Well, the Road Glide Custom is basically a Street Glide with the Road Glide fairing on the front. These bikes both under went a few more sleek styling touches. They both lost the tail light off the back fender and now the braking functions are all integrated into the turn signals. The other significant change can be found in the exhaust system. The Street Glide and Road Glide now come equipped with a 2 into 1 pipe. The 17 inch front wheel just wasn’t enough so an 18 inch front wheel was slapped on there this year. These bikes definitely encompass the definition of the sporty touring bike, complete with factory-lowered rear suspension.

A new Edition of Harley’s flagship touring bike has been released this year. The Ultra Limited (FLHTK) boasts the 103 Cubic Inch motor along with some other functional and aesthetic upgrades. The Limited only comes in two-tone premium paint schemes. It comes standard with all the factory options offered on the normal Ultra Classic such as ABS and security. The tour pack comes with the luggage rack on top and inside there is a power supply for you to plug in a cell phone, toaster, or whatever electronic device you might have. For colder weather you have the luxury of the stock heated grips. To finish it off, these touring machines have had their 28 spoke cast wheels chromed up a touch. Hopefully no one notices that this bike has bumped the Electra Glide Standard (FLHT) out of the lineup.

Last year for the 2009 model year, Harley introduced its first full factory Trike. This bike got a lot of people who were physically no longer able to ride back on the road; either that, or people who just wanted to have something new and different jumped on this bike. Well that same platform has undergone a chopped make-over to create a Street Glide styled Trike. The Street Glide Trike (FLHXXX) is your bare minimum, chopped, and sleek styled three-wheeler. This bike basically takes the touring stigma and touring look out of the Trike for a clean custom cruiser.

As far as the CVO line goes this year there are a couple nice surprises. The Long-awaited Screamin’ Eagle Street Glide has finally arrived. The Fatbob CVO is back for the second year in a row with some new styling points. The seat has a cool, new distressed leather look to it. Of course the Ultra Classic is in the Screamin’ Eagle lineup as always. This year it has a flame paint job with a new LED light strip on the back of the tour pack. It also comes with the power supply in the tour pack similar to that of the Ultra Limited. The newest addition to the Custom Vehicle Operation line is the Convertible (FLSTSE). It is built around the Softail chassis and has some versatility to it. The bike comes equipped with a mini fairing and saddle bags, both of which can be removed for those not-so-long trips around town. Then when you need the functionality of the added wind protection and the storage, these items easily bolt right back onto the bike.

So there are some exciting changes this year. The technology and advancement is continuous each year. As the models evolve they become more reliable and comfortable. The same simplistic, traditional lines remain while increasing performance. Till next year, happy riding and come down to check out the 2010’s!!!

Open House Event Recap

First off I would like to give a special thanks to everyone that came out to the Open House event last Saturday. We had a great time and we hope everyone else did too. We just wanted to give a small recap on the event for everyone.

The morning started off with a little rain and was a pretty muggy, but it burned off around noon. You don’t get a lot of humidity in California, but Saturday there was quite a bit in the air and it was hot! Some of the major events were the fashion show, 2010 bike unveiling, and Bob’s choice bike show.
The fashion show was a complete hoot. We had a number of volunteers and employees strutting their stuff on the runway and some of them got really into it. The new Motorclothes® looked really good on the girls and guys and I’m sure everyone would agree with me. After the fashion show was over he had some of the new 2010 models introduced by the Laidlaws. There are a number of new models and some that are being reintroduced this year that we are really excited about. I’m personal favorites are the new Fat Boy® Lo and the new Dyna Wide Glide®. These bikes both look way nice.

We also had the Bob’s choice bike show where entries were judged by our very own Bob Laidlaw. Bob ended up choosing a very nice looking Softail® Deluxe as the winner. The bike was dripping with chrome and had some sweet handle bars. All of the entries looked great, we even had a Yamaha entry, but Bob is a little bias and he didn’t choose it as the winner. All of the proceeds for the bike show went to Operation Gratitude which is an organization that provides care packages for US troops overseas. They are also helping us distribute the items for our Red, White, and Blue promotion.

At the event were a number of different charities and Harley related groups. Some of which were The Guide Dogs of America Foundation, Lucky 13, Quick Throttle Magazine, Golden State Skaters, Choir Boys, and Mattel Toys. The Mattel toy wheel was a big hit and I am pleased to report I won some mini carsthat I race around my desk. Those guide dogs were also amazing, I had no idea it cost $40,000 to train one of these Seeing Eye dogs. It is truly amazing what these dogs can do. We also had a number of great food vendors that had some amazing food. The Kung Pow Burrito was to die for!

All in all we hope everyone had a great time and hope to see you at the Red, White, and Blue BBQ on September 12th!

History of Sturgis

So because this week is Sturgis Bike Rally we decided to look around for information on how long the rally has been going and what its origins were. We found a good explanation that answered a lot of the questions so we decided to share it with you guys. Enjoy! In 1936 J. Clarence "Pappy" Hoel bought part of Indian Motorcycles. Pappy is now considered the founder and father of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. This same year a local motorcycle club called the Jackpine Gypsies was formed. The club produced the racers of the first event and today is home to motor-cross and hill climb events. The first rally, known as the Black Hills Motor Classic, took place in 1938 with only nine racers and a small group of spectators from biker clubs in Mitchell, Sioux Falls, Minnesota, and Colorado. This first year most visitors camped in Pappy's backyard and at Sturgis City Park.

The first year made Pappy and the Jackpine Gypsies realize the potential the event had for the future. The rally was a fun family event and could bring the community of Sturgis, South Dakota much business and tourism. Over the years, history has watched Sturgis welcome more and more spectators, riders, and vendors into its community during a few days in August. It wasn't until 1963 that the rally turned into a multi-day event. Around this time the Jackpine Gypsies also began events like the hill climb and motor-cross. In 1965 the rally became a five day event and in 1975 it became seven days long. Sturgis also began blocking off Main Street so that bikers had a place to park their bikes and not have to worry about traffic. The first vendors, only nine of them, were welcomed to sell goods in 1979. And by 1968, there were 117 vendors lining the streets of Sturgis. In 1989, founder Pappy Hoel died at age 85. But the rally lived on, with over 600,000 visitors and participants in 2000. In 2002, the city realized the need for a department that would be in charge of organizing and marketing the annual event. In 2003, the Black Hills Motor Classic officially became the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. 2005 marked the 65th anniversary for this famous bike week.

Since the 1940s, Sturgis has not only seen a change and increase in the spectators, but the motorcycles have also changed over the years. When the rally began there were really only two types of motorcycles that were ridden, Harley Davidson and Indian. These older bikes were huge compared to today's models. As bikes have changed, so have the types of events at the rally. You can still enter longer races and tours, but newer riders enjoy short-track races and hill climbs. Vince and Patty's Cross Country Ride!

Several months ago, Vince, a customer of mine came in to visit me. We started talking about new motorcycles and he expressed some concerns he had about a month long road trip him and his wife were planning on taking. He was thinking about moving to some kind of trike for longer trips. I told him about the Voyager kits that we have installed on several other customers bikes and that we had a mechanic at Laidlaw’s Harley-Davidson that could install one of these kits for him. I introduced him to Lee and Daniel that day and they ordered the conversion kit to match his Ultra Classic. After a couple weeks the conversion we completed and Vince was able to head out on his month long adventure across the United States. After his trip Vince was nice enough to send me an E-mail about how his trip was and some pictures!

As to the trip, for the first leg of the trip we headed over to Laughlin, NV and spent the night there. We then headed south to Holbrook, Arizona. While we were in Arizona we visited an old part of the original route 66. I included a picture with a pretty interesting bridge in Winona, Arizona. It was considered a marvel when it was first constructed. The next morning we awoke to a dead battery but after a jump start we got into Albuquerque, New Mexico were we spent two days having the battery replaced and visiting Santa Fe, New Mexico. We then went on to Tucumcari, New Mexico and then Dalhart, Texas, Liberal, Kansas and Kansas City, then Saint Louis, MO. We then rode the bike to Decatur, Illinois where we spent a week. We then headed to Detroit, MI to visit a friend for another few days. We returned home through Oklahoma on Highway 40 and followed it home.

All in all we traveled over 5000 miles and were gone exactly one month. The Voyager was a big help in the high winds we encountered along the way and some rain. However except for the battery replacement the trip was a lot of fun. My wife really loves the Voyager, especially in bad weather. Packing double and pulling the trailer, we averaged 34-38 mpg on 91 octane. As to the Harley, it ran as all Harleys do - perfectly!

SGV HOG's Wild Ride to the Kern River

This weeks blog was sent to us by the San Gabriel Valley HOG chapter. They had a fun trip to the Kern River with some unexpected twists! Thanks to Lon for writing this recap. Enjoy!

This weekend’s ride was the most life threatening, with potential for disaster, in the history of this chapter!! Now that I have your attention I will cover this calamity later on in this recap.

Saturday morning 24 riders and passengers on 13 bikes and one car left the donut shop at 8 a.m. for the Roadhouse Restaurant at Kramer Junction on highway 395 for breakfast.

After we filled our bellies and gas tanks we continued on north to Randsburg for a short stop to get rid of some of the coffee we had at breakfast and some lite shopping. It’s always amazing to watch my wife Robin shop when the time is limited. That woman can really move, so don’t get in her way. Instead of returning to 395 north we decided to take the back way out of Randsburg to highway 14 north to highway 178 west. This saved us about 15 to 20 miles. Highway 178 is fairly scenic with lots of sweepers and rolling hills. As we got closer to Lake Isabella we started to see cattle ranches on our right. I almost caught some of those happy cows (future steaks) playing soccer. We made it into Kernville about 1:30 p.m. and spent about an hour sight seeing, shopping and snacking.

On the way out of town we filled our gas tanks and headed north 15 miles to McNally’s Fairview Lodge. After check-in and unpacking everyone set about exploring or just relaxing and enjoying everyone’s company. The people that had the trailers thought they were “cute”. Jenny liked them so much she made a reservation to come back in August. Most everyone ended up on the patio behind the restaurant which is on the Kern River. We were getting a nice cool breeze there as it was nearly 100 degrees.

At 6 p.m. everyone gathered in the lodge restaurant for dinner. Everyone ordered some kind of steak except Randy. I think he has something against cows that play soccer. Most everyone thought the steaks were some of the finest they have ever had or close to it. I won‘t talk about how huge and delicious the mud pie deserts were. I don’t want people to think we are a bunch of food crazed pigs (HOGS). After dinner we considered roasting some “peeps” but they were in hiding and could not be found. So we broke up into two groups. The “beer group” went to the patio and the “Jim Beam group” went to the porch area in front of their rooms. When the “Jim Beamers” ran out they joined the “beer group“. This lasted till about 10 p.m. when most everyone retired to their rooms.

Now you are probably wondering “what about this potential life threatening disaster?” Well my little ones be patient and don’t bust your vest extenders I will get to that soon.

In the wee early hours of the morning “when sh-t happens!”, Robin and I were in our room minding our own business and dreaming about the next day’s ride when at about 1:45 a.m. we hear this pounding on the wall. We thought our neighbors next door (who will remain nameless at this time) were having some kind of wild lovin’. We decided to ignore the pounding. After about 15 minutes we discovered that the pounding was coming from the door and we could hear our names being called. I opened the door to find Cindy eerily silhouetted by a flashing light and a whole lot of smoke and the smell of something burning (kind of reminded me of Rod Serling and the Twilight Zone). She informed me that the fire department had informed the lodge to be ready to evacuate on a moment’s notice. There is a forest fire one mile north of us and across the river.

The danger was if the wind kicked up, the fire would jump the river and then burn towards us. Robin and I got dressed, packed up and loaded the bike. Everyone gathered in front of Dale’s room waiting for further instructions. The owner of the lodge had gotten a hold of Randy by land line as there was no cell phone reception in the canyon. Randy was staying at a B & B four miles above the fire. I told him to stay there as it was safer. The scary part was that the fire had burned for awhile before anyone reported it. Campers across the river from the fire decided to go down to the lodge where the only land line was to report the fire. So kids, we all (except Randy) could have been toast as everyone slept if the fire had jumped the river.

We all camped out in front of Dale’s room for about an hour wondering what idiot started this fire that could possibly screw up our next day’s ride. Being true bikers we tried to make light of it. Someone came up with a story that the “peeps” were making their escape up the river and were caught by campers. The campers decided to roast their prisoners and during the ensuing battle a fire started. After all the stories had been told it was 3 a.m. We decided to go to our rooms to sleep as the fire department said they would return if things got worse and evacuate us. Everyone slept in their clothes that night.

It was Sunday morning and the Harley God was looking out for us as the wind did not kick up, the fire did not jump the river and most important the road was still open. Everyone got ready, we had our riders meeting at 7:45 a.m. on what “not” to do while riding on mountain roads. We were off at 8 a.m. to pick up Randy on the way to The Trail of 100 Giants. A mile up the road we passed a bunch of fire crews and a large burn area that was still burning with hot spots and helicopters dropping water, it looked pretty bad. Those guys really did a good job controlling the fire.

About 45 minutes later we were at the trail. Less than half of us went to see these huge trees while the ones with hangovers and lack of sleep stayed in the parking lot. Next we were off to the Ponderosa Lodge for breakfast. The lodge is located in a beautiful forest setting at 7,200 feet and a very pleasant 75-80 degrees. They had a table set up for us on the patio so we had great scenery. Everyone ordered a conventional breakfast except Randy whom wanted egg beaters. The waitress promptly informed Randy they only serve “mountain food!”. I guess she felt sorry for him and said she was going to take care of him like she takes care of her flower garden. So Randy’s new handle is “Pansy!!”. After a great meal we assembled out front for a group photo.

The 45 mile 90 minute ride to Porterville was very scenic with lots of twisties and short sweepers and luckily the road was very clean of gravel. As we arrived in Porterville the temperature was 108. We stopped for gas and lots of water and then headed home down Hwy 65 to Hwy 99 to 5 frwy to 210 frwy to the San Gabriel Valley and reality. Other than almost being toasted in a forest fire, everyone had a great time. And that’s the way it was.

Riding in High Winds

I recently read an interesting article about riding in high winds in the HOG magazine. The article was titled “Riding in High Winds” by Becky Tillman. It has a number of good pointers about how riders can avoid accident due to windy conditions or just make your ride more enjoyable in general even if the wind does kick up.

Some of the points brought up in the article are the differences between the bike models. All Harley-Davidsons are pretty heavy bikes, which has major benefits because the bike isn’t blown around as much. Harleys also have a lower center of gravity which makes it easier to cut into the wind. One of the things that can make it more difficult are add-ons like touring packs that can act like sails in high wind and allow the bike to be blown around. Even fairings can act as sails if the wind hits you at a cross, something I never thought about.

Probably the most important thing you can do to prevent getting blown over is just be able to predict where the wind is going to sneak up on you. Some prime examples of this are when you are passing a truck or driving under an overpass. The wind will ebb for a bit and then hit you full force. This can catch you off guard if you aren’t ready. Also, look for appropriate signs that say if a location has strong winds or a crosswind.

The last point that was brought up was having appropriate gear to handle the wind. Make sure you have adequate eye protection to keep debris out of your eyes. A helmet with a facemask or a simple scarf over your mouth would be enough for most people. Avoid having any loose clothing that could flap in the wind and distract you from the road.

Marilyn's Trip to Solvang

HOG organizes rides for its members to enjoy and last month they made a trip to Solvang, CA. Thanks again Marilyn for sending this in and enjoy reading about her trip to Solvang with San Gabriel Valley HOG!

I have been riding for a few months now. I always wanted a bike since I was 16 and now 30 years LATER I finally have one! As I learned how to ride I often thought about how cool it would be just to go down the open highway on my Harley-Davidson. I got my chance when our San Gabriel Valley HOG Chapter planned a trip to Solvang. I went there as a child every year with my grandmother and Mother growing up.

We met at a doughnut shop and it was a little chilly and overcast. Because of the size of the group we set off in two separate groups. I had never ridden with a group this big before and everyone was so nice to me. Everyone had great big smiles and most hadn't even had their coffee yet!

As we went through Pasadena and further north we started getting a little drizzle and heavy mist. Ok so it wasn't heavy but I had not "done" rain! Now, I don't like freeways and I have never ridden in rain, but the road captain, John was very attentive and was looking out for me. I kept going and it really wasn't bad at all and before we knew it we stopped for a fill-up and bathroom break.

The route had been pre-planned and it was an amazing little trip. Who knew that California had such nice little country roads? We traveled up to Fillmore and stopped at Ojai for lunch. I made some really nice friends and we had a great lunch together. I had so much fun meeting new people and getting to know them! They were so full of helpful information and riding tips! Before you knew it we had "saddled up" and were on our way to Solvang again. The view riding past Lake Cachuma and Lake Casitas was so wonderful from a bike! All your senses get used! Wind, sunshine, warm smells of the lake-and one skunk somewhere! You couldn't see it but you could smell it!

We got to Solvang and saw some townspeople doing traditional Danish dances and there were many adorable shops and everything was just the way I remembered it! Now I have some new memories with new friends! I am so glad I went on the ride and got past my fear of riding with new people. Everyone was so helpful and made the experience totally awesome! I can't wait to get together again for next month's adventure.....adventures in HOG!

A silver Lining

Repairing a bike isn't something anyone wants to do. Its time consuming and worst of all, its time we can't ride. At Laidlaw's collision repair center we do our very best to get the job done fast with as little hassle as possible. This week we decided to let people see what others are saying about the great folks we have working in the Laidlaw's collision repair center.

My name is Corey Christensen, and unfortunately I have my Ultra-Classic in your collision center right now. I have had some service work done at your dealership, and my friends have too. I kind of know Justin indirectly and know he is a conscientious and thorough guy. I have been dealing with Tami Kehler since the bike was bought in and want you to know that she is the perfect person for the job. She has been understanding, sympathetic, thorough, and all-around just a sweetheart. You couldn’t have picked a better employee for the job.

I’m looking forward to the day I can meet her and the day I can come get my bike. I know you will do your best to make it better than it was.

I would like to commend two of Laidlaw's employees. In November of last year I had the misfortune of crashing my 2007 Electra Glide. At the advice of my Progressive agent I had my bike towed to your store, even though I live within walking distance of my local dealer. I was immediately contacted by Tami in collision. I informed her of my desire to get my bike back as soon as possible as this is my main source of transportation. Tammy informed Justin of this and we were able to set an appt. right away.

The bike had extensive damage, especially to painted parts. Justin let me know we were looking at 10 to 12 weeks to completion. He was very thorough in going over the damages with me and letting me know exactly what he was going to do. It seemed more like 10 months, but for the next 10 weeks I heard from Tami on a regular basis. Although most of the calls consisted of telling me we were still waiting on painted parts, I really appreciated the courtesy of the updates. When I was finally able to pick up the bike, it looked amazing and all of my old parts were returned as requested. I'm sorry I was not able to see Tami when I picked the bike up, but once again Justin was very thorough and professional.

So I would like to take this opportunity to thank both Tami and Justin and to let Laidlaw’s Harley know that they have two very dedicated, thoughtful and professional employees in the collision center that are a huge asset to your company and your customers.

A Fathers Day Tribute to Big Daddy

For Fathers Day this year we decided to make a tribute to someone that is a father to all of us here at Laidlaw's Harley-Davaidson, Bob Laidlaw. Bob is in his 52nd year as a harley dealer and if you have ever had a chance to talk with Bob you know that he has seen a lot of changes in the motorcycle industry and Harley-Davidson over the years. So take the time and read a little history about Laidlaw's founder, Big Daddy, Bob Laidlaw

Bob Laidlaw was born in 1931 the third of four sons in the Los Angeles area; he has always had a love for anything with two wheels. His first motorcycles were three Indians, a pony, scout and a war surplus shaft drive Indian. Buying and selling them got him his first Harley Davidson, a 1936, 61” knuckle head. At the time, it was the best motorcycle you could own.

While still in high School he bought, fixed and sold three other Harleys and got a job at a Harley dealership in 1947. After graduating he bought a new 1950 Harley-Davidson with 74” engine, it retailed for $ 995.00 (you could then buy a new 4 door ford or Chevy, no radio or heater for that price.)

Bob married Frances Palmer in 1951, they had two boys and two girls, and they now have thirteen grand children and four great grand children.

In 1958 at age twenty-seven, Bob, purchased what is now known as Laidlaw’s Harley-Davidson. He Paid $28,000 for the building and everything in it. He made a small down payment and a handshake agreement for the rest. The store sold twenty-eight units the prior year.

It was then when Bob saw his first Honda 50cc, he remembered critics thinking, “Honda will never make it with this thing!” It was a good time to get into the motorcycle business, by 1970 Bob was the top volume dealer two years in a row, and he sold hundreds of new sportsters for $1,895. Bob served as president of the Southern California Dealer Association and was on the factory dealers’ advisory board.

Bob remembered well his visit to the junior factory, “engines where assembled on the 3rd floor, assembly line was on the 2nd floor. The assembly line consisted of grey wooden carts with steel wheels that started with a frame, and were pushed by hand, from station to station until you had a finished Harley Davidson, the entire first floor was an office and in the basement the units were run, crated and shipped”.

When Bob first started working at the dealership it was pretty small, in 1963 they built a new location with about 10,000 sq. ft of space which was considered huge for the time. In 2002, the need for expansion came again and Laidlaw’s relocated to their current location in Baldwin Park. The building is 60,000 sq. ft and is run by Bob and his two sons, Brent and Jerry.

Bob has always enjoyed performance work and drag racing, he also goes on daily rides and still test rides bikes to diagnose problems. Bob jokes that after turning the responsibility of running the dealership to his sons, he still is at the dealership more than them.

For twenty-seven years he has also had several airplanes. He loves to fly and every now and then he will convince someone to go up with him, but he has few returning passengers.

Bob has been making his living with Harley Davidson for 62 years, 51 of those have been as a dealer. There have been hard times, but the last 20 years have been really great, hopefully the next ten years will be just as good.

He appreciates his friendships and one-on-ones he has enjoyed with all the Davidson family starting with William H. Davidson who was president in 1958. It has been a great ride, Bob feels very proud and blessed to be a part of the Harley Davidson family of dealers and the opportunity it has given him to meet so many great people.

Jenna's Ladies Night Out

As an employee of the Laidlaw’s Harley-Davidson staff, I sometimes find it hard to admit that not only do I not drive a Harley, but I have also never been on the back seat of a motorcycle in general. Being female and coming into a life-style that is said to be male dominated, I sometimes find it intimidating to speak to customers about the knowledge I have acquired from working here at Laidlaw’s. However, May 28th, 2009 I found myself helping out at the female’s garage party, an event to gather women who are thinking about riding as well as experienced riders, hosted here at Laidlaw’s.

I was told that I would be showing the females how to stand the motorcycles up after sitting on them, because I am one of the smallest females in the company, if not the smallest. This was to make smaller riders feel at ease and feel as if they too would have no problem picking up the bike, or riding. The only problem with that is I myself did not know how to do that. After a fifteen minute crash course I felt confident enough in myself and the quick lesson I received, to carry out the task. When the ladies began to flow the nerves set in. The R.S.V.P. count was set at about 97 women, and it was no wonder as to why out of no where I felt as if I was unable to show what I had learned.

The event started of smoothly with Rachel Hernandez, from the Motorclothes department, as our M.C. It was surprising to me to see so many women who had never met feel so comfortable with one another because of their curiosity to ride, willingness to learn, or in the case of experienced riders their want to tell their story and help other women learn to love what they love. After they had all had the chance to eat they had been split it up into groups based on the type of bike that was written on the card they had received once checking into the event; softails, dynas, sporsters, and streetglides. There were four stations and after about fifteen minutes had gone by, the women would rotate to a new station, until they had been to all four.

At the end of the evening, after the women had been to each station, Bob Laidlaw rounded up the group and escorted them into the rentals center where the event originally began. There he would say a few farewell words, the women could hand in the survey they received in the beginning of the evening to receive a gift bag, and then were free to purchase items, ask additional questions, or talk amongst themselves. When I went to change out of riding boots into my normal shoes, I found that women who had never ridden were looking for me to ask how to pick up the bikes, an experience I never thought would happen.

I later found myself engaging in conversations with the women about what they found the most interesting, or what helped them the most. To my surprise a lot of very experienced riders said that Jennifer Heine in service helped them the most. She showed the women how to pick they’re bike up in a situation if they had dropped it. One woman said that she was so worried the first time that she dropped her bike that she called her husband, but had she known before she would’ve been able to do that herself, and it would’ve really saved her the intense fear she felt that first time.

The night seemed great, it really encouraged me to be interested in learning more about the bikes to help other women. And I saw in a lot of those who attended, whether they have never ridden, or they’ve been out there for years, a willingness to explore the things they didn’t know about, and share about the things that inexperienced riders may find useful throughout they’re starting up process. I honestly found myself willing and curious to become a passenger, if not a rider. The passion that female riders have is unlike anything I’ve ever seen and it makes you want to be a part of that if for nothing more than to have something to be passionate about.

The New Hammock Touring Seat

I just read an article in the HOG magazine today that I felt was pretty interesting. It’s about the new Hammock touring seat by Harley Davidson. This seat is really nice to sit on, but what makes it really nice is the fact that it can help you ride longer without feeling fatigued.

The seat uses a new Elastomer Fabric Support Sling system that basically puts your rear in a stretchy hammock. When you hit a bump the material flexes and sinks, but you never touch the bottom of the seat pan. You have a full 2 inches of travel. What this translates to is you feel 12% less shock from bumps in the road which is a big improvement especially over long rides. You can see the pocket the hammock is in the picture below.

The seat is about an inch taller than a standard Ultra Classic seat because of the suspension system. You can come down and take a look at it at Laidlaw’s Harley-Davidson, but you won’t really notice the difference until you ride on it.

The Making of Matt's Black Magic

The new trend in the Harley-Davidson world is the Dark Custom line of motorcycles. Just to name a few: The Nightrain, Street Bob, Fat Bob, Nightster, and the Night Rod special. All with the common characteristics of having that blacked-out look. The style really gets its roots from the bobber era. Then mix that with the garage/primer influence and you have an idea of how the look has evolved into what it is today.

Well I, like many people, have really gotten hooked on this new look. I have always appreciated a fully chromed-out bike, but there is something about the dark, customized style that I can’t get enough of. Basically I knew that this was the look I had to have.

My problem was that fact that Harley-Davidson has yet to develop a Dark Custom bike on their new touring chassis. Four out of the five Harley frames house one of these Dark Custom bikes. So why was the touring family neglected? Is it because of this huge misconception that the touring bikes are for old fogies? Do the designers at Harley-Davidson think that this styling only appeals to younger riders? Maybe they think that younger riders won’t buy a touring bike because of the false stigma that has been stuck on these bikes? Well regardless, some of the good people at Laidlaw’s decided to fix this problem.

I knew I had to have the premium frame, which in my opinion is the touring. Then I wanted to combine this with a wicked, blacked-out look. Jerry Laidlaw recommended I start out with a police Roadking. This was a good choice because it already has a ton of black on it.

After I nailed down the bike I started bouncing some ideas off Justin McGinnis in service. He quickly caught my vision and started making recommendations that I really liked. Justin has worked in the motorcycle business for 11 years and really has a knack for putting together some awesome creations.

Initially, two of the most distinguishing features on the bike were the forward mounted controls and the ape-hanger bars. Justin showed me some custom wheels that matched the controls perfectly and we went ahead and slapped those on there as well. There were a lot of other details after that, but to simplify things we powder coated everything black!

When all the powder coating got back Ron Corwin was the man assigned to piece it all together. He is the head mechanic in our collision department and has worked on more hogs than a bacon farmer. The bike came together perfectly. My Dark Custom vision was now a rolling black hole, a black hole with chrome accents that is.

Hopefully in the future we will see some factory Dark Customs on the new touring chassis. I guess that will all depend on how the current ones sell. I do have to say the Electra Glide standard comes in black denim this year which is a step in the right direction. It would be a great choice for a sinister look. This last weekend marked the 28th running of the Adelanto Grand Prix. Once again hosted by the Desert Vipers MC, it was a beautiful weekend for racing! All the recent rains knocked down all the dust, and this year’s course was the fastest ever. There were all kinds of races from pro to amateur, kid’s races, side hacks, and even the old vintage bikes were brought out of storage to tear up the Adelanto dirt!
Year after year, my friends and I go out to this race. In fact, I don’t think we’ve missed one since I started riding again some 6 or 7 years ago. And every year we race amongst each other, some guys are lightning fast, some of us are not. But that one thing we have in common, racing, means we are all part of something bigger than just the race.
We come to together to support each other, to help each other, and when needed, console each other. We ride together, we race together, and we celebrate together.
This year was no different. As we all congregated together Friday night for the pre race barbeque bonanza, there was once again that buzz in the air. There were only 4 of us this year (usually we have 7 or 8), but we were all ready to rock the track and once again show each other that we still have that fire in us. My friends Scotty and Johnny were up first. Both took off like they were shot out of canons. Scotty would go on to finish in the top 5, pending official results. Johnny was a little bit farther off the pace after he stalled the bike in a huge burmed corner and it took him forever to get the bike started. But both finished, which is a victory unto itself with the brutal ness of the track getting worse and worse. Next it was my turn with my buddy Tony. Tony was actually racing on his brother Johnny’s bike, so he barely made it to the start line in time. He was so late in getting to the line, he never even had to shut off his engine (Starts are dead engine starts, so you have to kick your bike over once the flag drops), he pulled into line as the flag was dropped, and just took off. One problem, he forgot to pull down his goggles, which he luckily decided to stop and put on once he ate a bunch of dust. I on the other hand did not have as great a start. I was forced to push my way through a couple of riders in front of me that were having trouble starting their bikes. By the time I got out and got going, I was stuck just behind the main pack. It took me a lap (Approx 10 miles) to finally relax and start riding my race. I pushed and pushed, going faster than I have in any previous race. It wasn’t until my third and final lap that I really started catching people and picking them off. I reached my first goal in finishing my race, but what’s more important than a possible top ten finish, is the friendships and camaraderie I have with my racing friends. Much like the people I see everyday here at Laidlaw’s, friends and family are an inspiration to ride with!

A Valentine's Thought

As Valentine’s approaches I think about sharing especially with our loved ones. I’ve been lucky and just reached 25 years of marriage with my wife Beckie. Though we come from disparate backgrounds and to most we are two very completely different people, we actually are politically, spiritually, and otherworldly like the line in Forrest Gump, peas and carrots. However, when it comes to motorcycling we are different.

She wants to ride, a scooter, but I worry about her inexperience. I ride typically to and from work which doesn’t give us much time together bike riding and I worry about the length of a ride because she’s had back surgery. I do want to share the enjoyment of riding that I have, even commuting, and we have on rare occasion—the last being a cruise up the Baja coast on a rental from Cabo San Lucas avoiding cows and goats and tipping the bike over on a Lucy-like maneuver at a gas station.

I enjoy watching couples ride to the store either separately on their own bikes or together on one. And even though the activity conjures up the vision of the lone rider, all of us who ride do share the commonality of enjoying the ride. I enjoy looking at the pictures of the SGVHOG chapter on their rides together seeing the Labans, the Engles, and other couples having a good time. I would enjoy the pictures more if it involved me, friends of mine that ride, and my wife—it’s up to me to make the effort.

As one once said, “There is no delight in owning anything unshared.” So with Valentines approaching, I promise to share and enjoy the ride more with my wife over the course of our next 25 years together.

The owner of this 2003 Harley-Davidson 100th Anniversary Heritage Softail springer-Gilbert Martus of Colton, California-took the limited edition bike and made it even more special by adding a host of Screaming Eagle parts that step up the look and power of the bike quite a bit. A 95-inch big-bore kit helps make the bike scream along with a six-speed Screaming Eagle transmission putting the power down smoothly.
The diamond-cut barrels add some additional flash. Keith at Laidlaw's Harley in Baldwin Park, California, handled the wrenching. Dean Padie performed the installation of the Samson fishtail exhaust. A Legends air suspension in the rear gets those fishtails scraping the pavement and gives the bike a beautiful stance. United Cycle's Pat took care of the air ride along with the pan-head rocker covers and most of the chrome.
And on the chrome note, there's plenty. Screaming Eagle dash and seats were added so the bike could live up to its name "Krome '03." Ron Magnus suggested using something totally out of the ordinary to cover the seat and came up with a python and leather combo that's quite a looker. The color of the python and the chrome frame of the seat play off of the silver anniversary paint well.
A 21-inch diamond-cut front wire wheel sets off the springer front end quite well and the 16-inch rear follows it up with the right look. It all adds up to one good-looking bike and Gilbert has quite a few first place trophies to prove it, along with a first in class at the Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona, California, in January of this year. Gilbert would like to thank "The Crew," a charity group that he often rides with, and his riding pal and the owner of the '39, Andy Martinez, along with his wife, Tammy, for her support.

10 Great Years

10 Great Years~
Some of you may or may not know that Keith Hurt (Service Manager at Laidlaws HD) and I are married, this year we are celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary Saturday February 14th, 10 years have flown by, it seems like yesterday we where saying “I DO”.

The reason for sharing this story with you is that you can find true love with Harley-Davidson. Keith and I met at the previous dealership that we worked for, and we instantly hit it off. I was like a school girl every time I was around him, (I still am). You just know when it’s right because we met in September of 98 and where married in February of 99.

On our 1 year anniversary we re-newed our love and vows Harley-Davidson style!
The dealership we worked in Nevada had a chrome wedding chapel in it. We thought it would be great to renew our vows there. We rode in wearing are best Harley-Davidson motorclothes, on our 2000 Lava Rich Red Fatboy, it was awesome!
Keith rode us right inside the dealership and pulled us up to the front of the custom chrome chapel and Keith & I renewed the vows in true Harley fashion and style! Once the vow renewal was done, we got back on the bike and I threw the bouquet I was carrying (and my friend Natalie caught it) 0ur family and friends where there and it was just a great way to celebrate our first year together, we even made the 5 o’clock news and the front page of the paper.
We where going to renew our vows for our 10th wedding anniversary (but with the arrival of Tanner, our newest addition, it just was not in the cards). So I thought and thought about how to say I love you and make it special~
Keith, you are my best friend, the rock of our family, my daily inspiration, and my happily ever after. I say my prayer’s everyday and thank the BIG GUY above that Harley-Davidson brought us together, Harley has provided a great life and I am still so proud to have you as my wonderful husband Keith. I love you-Patty

Perfect Weather for riding on road or off!

This weekend’s perfect weather meant it was another great time to go riding. Working here at Laidlaw’s has taught me a lot about Harley-Davidson’s and why they are such a great touring and cruising bike. However, I still find myself resorting back to the riding I started as a
kid, and still do now. I’m a desert off road racer. There’s no sand to soft, whoop to big, or mountain to high to climb. I love my weekends out in Lucerne Valley, enjoying beautiful weather, great friends, and the most awesome riding you will ever find. A friend of mine (owns a 06 Road King Classic) and I were talking about the differences this weekend. All though the off road riding is a major part of his riding passion,
he claims the wind and road on his Road King are an all together different animal with equal soul mending relaxation. Its you and the road,
and much like off road, you only have to avoid the obstacles on the road. After talking to my friends, most of which are H-D owners, I think its time my wife and I see what this cruising the open road thing is all about. So I have my appointment for my M1, and once I get it, we will
hit the open road. I’ll get back to you with the results!

Is it Saturday Yet?

Yes it is, and that means its Ocotillo time again. Time to head out for the weekend, and we just got back from a great weekend with the family. My brother just bought a new 5th wheel toy hauler 3605 Ragen and had to use it this weekend, nothing like a new RV'r. The weather
on the way out Saturday night was raining until we got into Ocotillo. Thank God for the RV, it was nice to have something to put
your stuff in so it didn't matter about the rain. Well it was a little chilly in the night time but that's what a bonfire is for. Sunday the weather was great, 70ish and a little breezy with some small clouds that made it a prefect day. So here it is Sunday morning and all you could smell was MOM cooking bacon, eggs and biscuits (thanks MOM I'm so glad you made it out) how perfect is this. The whole family camping in the middle of nowhere and a hot breakfast. Then it was time to ride, so we all get geared up. Mom takes the little kids in the Polaris as we head out for the morning Bonzi run. Where to go? Lets go where we haven't been before. After about 4 hours we headed back to camp for some lunch and a break. While its time to head home, until the next time, happy riding and we’ll see you out there. Keep the shinny side on the ground!

Saving My Harley

Remembering the fires in OC, Yes I was one of the families that was right in the middle of the fires. On the day of the fires I was at work and received a call from the wife saying everything around us was on fire. My wife tells me that we are getting evacuated from our house. I'm freaking out, so I left work to go home and the freeways are shut down. My normal path home is the 10 fwy to 57 fwy off at Imperial and up to Yorba Linda. I hit the 10 and no traffic (Saturday) I think to myself cool I'll make it home in no time. I hit the 57 fwy and traffic is going nowhere. It take me 1 1/2 hrs to get, normally a 40 min drive from Laidlaw's. On the drive home I'm thinking to myself what do I need to grab. The Harley of course and some clothes if the house is still standing. I finally get to the front door and no one is there. My sons show up about 5-10 mins after that. So we load the truck with some stuff. Still don’t know what we loaded that day. You would have to been there to see what is was like. Fire all around us and you are in a panic mode. So after about 30-45 mins we are finally done and my sons take off to meet up with the wife. Would you have stayed or would you have gone? Well you know us thick headed males, I stayed to protect the house. After an about an hour, after my son left, my neighbor’s roof starts to catch on fire. So the neighbors on the another side and myself grab the hoses and start spraying down his roof. After about 10 mins or so we finally put the roof out. That why I stayed behind to make sure my family had a house to come home to. You should of seen the helicopters flying over the house. They where picking up water at East Lake Village one after the other to water drop the houses that were on fire in the neighborhood. Thank god for modern technology and thanks to all the fireman that helped out to make sure to minimize the damage.

Recently a good friend of mine bought a bike from us. It wasn’t until I called him that night about how his ride went did I realize the similarities of me getting back on a bike.

I rode as a kid (mini bikes, a little Honda 50, then my friend’s Yamaha 125 dirt bike, and graduated to a Honda CB 450). I moved to California and had to sell everything (including my bike). Went to school, got married, and didn’t ride for 19 years. About 10 years ago, me and a bunch of friends talked about riding again like we did as kids, took the class, and I’m the only one who completed the course. And I’m the only one who actually got a bike and continues to ride. I didn’t realize how much I missed riding until I took it up again, and now that I finally have a real bike (a Harley of course), I ride as often as possible. Though mostly to and from work.

Back to my friend. He hadn’t ridden in 20 years and he talked on about this being his first Harley and how much fun he had as well as how nervous he was on the freeways. He talked about riding without gloves as a kid and how cold it used to get in the fall back in his hometown. It really took a long time talking to him before he actually made the purchase, and we mostly talked about the fun of riding and the memories we had as youngsters.

I bet there are a lot of friends we have that share these same experiences and don’t ride. Convince them to ride, share the fun.

A Special Customer Experience

On Saturday, November 30th, I had an experience with a newly married couple that made me appreciate the mystique of Harley Davidson. A couple came in that were in their late 50’s looking for a bike. They had been shopping around a bit bouncing from dealer to dealer trying to find the right dealership experience. After several dealership visits they were still unsatisfied with what they had found and they decided to make one last stop here at Laidlaw’s. I greeted them as they came in and took a couple of minutes to get to know them. They were married on Valentines Day of this year and were looking to make their dream of owning a new Harley a reality. They had both been through hard times and were looking to the Harley to bring some joy into their lives. They were thinking about purchasing a Fat Boy, but they were still unsure if it was the right bike. After working with them for about an hour I wasn’t convinced that the Fat Boy was the right bike for their riding needs. I took them to the back of the store where we keep the rest of our new inventory and showed them a beautiful black Road King which had all the accessories they were looking for. Upon seeing the bike, the wife burst into tears as she immediately realized that this was the bike for them. This was the Harley Davidson of their dreams. Perhaps working amongst the Harley’s every day for the last couple years has numbed me a bit to what a Harley can mean to people. Meeting people like this has allowed me to appreciate the fact that Harley’s are more than just a motorcycle. Harley’s can be a symbol of hope and healing. There are few things in this world that allow us to literally put our troubles behind us. Luckily, we have Harley Davidson.

Matt Laidlaw @ his First Love Ride

I went on my first Love Ride this year and I am glad I got to experience a ride of that magnitude. It was definitely a part of the Harley culture that I had not yet been a part of. The excitement of riding with thousands of other bikes is something that really gets your heart beating.

My dad, Jerry Laidlaw, and I started off at Laidlaw’s Harley-Davidson where we picked up a couple bikes. I rode a 2008 Roadking from our rental fleet and Jerry rode a 2006 Streetglide. We then headed over to Glendale Harley-Davidson early in the morning. We got there, parked our bikes in line with everyone else, and then headed into the rally. I was privileged enough to get access to the back area where some of the more high-profile riders were. I had a great time meeting guys like Jay Leno, Willie Davidson, Mike Metzger, and Robert Patrick. Everyone was very friendly and just there to have a good time for a good cause.

After a few motivating words from Grand marshal Leno we were off down the main drag to the freeway. There were thousands of people all lining the sidewalks cheering on the riders as we all roared down the road. It was an awesome sight to see. Never in my life have I seen more motorcycles on the highway then cars. We were no longer the minority but definitely the majority at that point. As we rolled down the highway there were pedestrians at every over pass all waving us on and just awing at the sheer number of Harley-Davidsons!

We soon reached the Pomona fair grounds where bike week was being held. There were a lot of great booths with all kinds of biker paraphernalia. I also checked out the “Wall of Death” which was a cool show to watch. Then we headed over to watch the bands play. Attendance was very good at the rally! That place was swarming with bikers from all walks of life all with one common interest, a passion for motorcycles. As we left we took a second to gaze at the sea of chrome out in the parking lot. Bikes practically stretched to the horizon!
Its times like this I can truly appreciate the value of a Harley-Davidson. They open the door to so many great opportunities that couldn’t be had otherwise. The social aspects and the biker camaraderie cannot be explained, only experienced!

I left to pursue this career for the next 17 years in two other dealerships in southern California , and then back to Laidlaw’s where I would like to finish out my career. Riding the 09' FLHTCUI, A Trip to Remember!

Just about a week ago, I was able to enjoy eight days of riding on a 2009 FLHTCUI through the beautiful state of Washington, as well as, Oregon and California. The ride was a great adventure, enabling me to see beautiful country, which was even more spectacular by the blessing of not a drop of rain. The trip highlights with out question, were the ride through Mount Rainier National Park and the remote coastlines of Washington and Oregon.

A huge asset to us all, (we traveled as a group of four riders) was the continual reliance and flawless performance of the new Garman Zumo Road Tech GPS. This device installed on my bike, was invaluable. Not only did it word perfectly throughout the entire trip, it is extremely user friendly and very comprehensive in its features to assist any rider unfamiliar with his or her surroundings. Along with its navigation and voice command directions, which were spoken through my helmet speaker headset, I greatly benefited from the ipod file of my personal music favorites I listened to when the XM satellite radio had poor reception. Moreover, the clear, interactive screen on the unit was much easier to use while riding, with gloves of course, than the radio would have been. In short, I never used the radio, I just feel in love with the GPS for all my music needs.

Although I do not have GPS in my personal Ford F-150 pick-up, I do now because this GPS easily detaches from the handlebar mount and reattaches to an easy/universal car dashboard mount. Believe me, having been entirely lost both night and day, unable to locate even the sun or moon, the navigation feature flawlessly directed us right back on course on numerous instances while traveling.

This product is and forever will be a part of any road trip of mine, whether it be by motorcycle or car, from now on. With it, I will have immediate identification of all food, hotels/motels gas stations and points of interest, not to mention the closest Harley Davidson Dealership.
So with all this goodness and peace of mind, how could my next trip ever be anything but better than the last.

10 Tips For Riding in a Group

1) Be Prepared
Make sure everything -- you, your gear and your bike -- are all ready to roll before heading out to the ride. Are you rested? Are you fed? Are you drug and alcohol-free? Did you pack rain gear? Layered clothing for temperature changes? Retro-reflective gear for night riding? Have you given your bike a solid pre-ride inspection in the following areas? T – Tires and Wheels C – Controls L – Lights and Electric O – Oil, Gas and other Fluids C – Chassis S – Side Stand
2) Have a Pre-Ride Meeting
Even if you're only riding with one or two other riders, put your heads together before the ride to discuss stops, signals, skill levels and speed. Large groups should be divided into smaller ones (five to seven riders at most). Employ the buddy system. Exchange cell phone numbers and agree on designated meeting places in case anyone gets separated from the pack
3) Learn Sign Language!
Hand signals will surely be used by riders in your group.
4) Stay in Formation
Staggered riding is preferred when riding with others to provide maximum space cushion for each rider in the group without hogging the road. The lead rider always takes the left third of the lane, with the second rider one-second behind in the right third of the lane. The third rider rides two seconds behind the lead rider, and so on. Single file is best whenever more space cushioning is needed, particularly on curves, highway ramps, poor roads and under bad weather conditions. Riders stop side by side at intersections, but should always move out one at a time, in tight formation, not side-by-side. Side-by-side riding reduces your space cushion limits your ability to respond to unexpected hazards.
5) Placement in the Pack
The two strongest riders should be placed at the front and rear of the group. The lead rider sets the pace and the tail (sweep) rider brings up the rear. Inexperienced riders should be up front, right behind the leader, allowing the leader to keep tabs and set the pace accordingly.
6) Pull Out the Stops
Take planned stops on the route, and allow everyone to rest. Even if the first riders to the rest stop have been waiting fifteen minutes for the last riders to arrive, the last riders still need significant break time. Don't cut anyone short!
7) Parking
Park tightly, one at a time, in an orderly fashion. Consider pulling through parking spaces in parking lots to make it easier for the group to pull out. For rather large groups, pre-planned parking may be necessary.
8) Must Have Items
At least one rider in the group must carry a cell phone, a first aid kit and a tool kit. Ideally, every rider should have basic emergency equipment just in case. Don't forget your license, current vehicle registration and proof of insurance, too. And if you ride helmet-less in your home state with no helmet law, you should bring a helmet to wear when crossing state lanes.
9) What Will you Do When?
What if you get too far behind or separated from the group? No need to push yourself to catch up. That's what cell phones and pre-determined meeting places are for! What if alcohol becomes involved? It's best to discuss rules regarding drinking and riding before you take off. Remember, when one group member rides under the influence, he or she compromises the safety of the entire ride.
10) Ride Your Own Ride
Group riding can be a real treat, but it can also be a real threat. If you feel pressured beyond your personal ability, skill or comfort level for too long, your ride will suffer. Be choosy about your riding buddies. It's important to have fun, but only you can ride your own ride.

Every time you hop on your motorcycle, keep these tips in mind to protect yourself and others on the road:
Give yourself space on all sides to help provide adequate reaction time if evasive maneuvers are necessary.
Ride in the left third of the lane. It often gives you the best line of sight for the road ahead.
Leave at least 2 seconds between you and the vehicle in front of you.
Consider the road conditions and traffic patterns, and adjust your riding strategy accordingly

On Saturday, August 23, was Ride for Autism Day at Laidlaw’s H-D. The crowds came early, all to show their support for all of the Autism Charities benefiting from this Ride. It was a warm day but that didn’t keep the entire Parking Lot from being jammed packed! Ride for Autism is a volunteer group dedicated to raising funds benefiting non-profit entities that are directly involved with the Autism Spectrum Disorder, by organizing motorcycle fun rides in the Los Angeles area. History of Laidlaw's Harley-DavidsonLaidlaw's Harley-Davidson Sales, Inc. had humble beginnings. Just back from serving in the military, Bob and his young wife purchased the shop from previous owner Johnny Gregurich. Shortly thereafter in 1958, the name was changed to reflect Laidlaw's Harley-Davidson.
Hard work, dedication, attention to detail and a focus on customer satisfaction helped Bob on the inevitable climb to success, and the success of the dealership. The word soon spread that in a small town in the San Gabriel Valley, a person could purchase a motorcycle for a reasonable price, have it worked on by a qualified mechanic, and be treated with common courtesy and consideration in a family run store.
After 44 years in Rosemead, California, Laidlaw's Harley-Davidson is now located in Baldwin Park. The 45,000+ square foot, state-of-the-art building is located at 1919 Puente Avenue in Baldwin Park. The building has 500 feet of store frontage which runs within feet of eastbound Interstate 10 between the Francisquito and Puente Avenue off-ramps. The original store would literally fit inside the service area of the new store. The 70-foot monument sign is difficult to miss. It advertises not only the dealership name, but also that we are a Harley-Davidson Authorized Rental Center.
These days Bob is semi-retired but both his sons, Jerry and Brent, are diligent at keeping up the same standards associated with the Laidlaw family name. Attention to detail and focus on customer satisfaction is still the number one priority.
